Viewport Texture Limit Size affects Image Editor when rendering with Cycles #81977

System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.8.14_1-x86_64-with-glibc2.17 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (NAVI10, DRM 3.38.0, 5.8.14_1, LLVM 10.0.0) X.Org 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.1.9

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-10-22 13:22, hash: f73dad211b, 2.91 Beta, 2.90.1
Worked: 2.90.1 (Before the GL accelerated Image Editor basically)

Short description of error
When limiting the size of viewport textures in the preferences (GL Texture Limit) the Image Editor / UV Editor are also affected.
This leads to huge slowdowns in Cycles when rendering images larger than the texture limit and is especially noticeable with high resolution renders (ie. Texture Limit of 4K + 8K render)
Eevee doesn't suffer the same slowdown because it doesn't update the image while rendering, but artifacts are noticeable when viewing the rendered image because of the down sampling, same as with Cycles.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Switch to Cycles
  • In preferences set Viewport Texture limit to anything other than unlimited. (ie. 4K)
  • Set render size to exceed Texture Limit size. (ie. 8K > 400% of default HD render resolution)
  • Render is slowed down by the limiting

I can confirm the slowness when rendering Cycles when the maximum texture size is limited (in the Viewport preferences).
I was unable to notice "artifacts" in the rendering result with Eevee, but in fact the final size of the texture is reduced, which was not the case in blender 2.90.1.

@Jeroen-Bakker, is the "GL accelerated Image Editor" commit really to blame?

This is related to D9160: Fix #81206: Do not limit gl texture size in image editor as this will ignore the gl texture limit for the image editor. But not sure why the 2.90 was added as broken as that version still uses the old image editor. If D9160 solve the issue it could be closed as duplicate.

Just tried 2.90.1 and it's fine, so I might have mixed up Blender versions while testing initially, sorry about that.
