  • Do not generate previews for object types that don't support them (cameras, materials, empties, etc). - D10334
  • Better handle flat surfaces (e.g. planes, circles), could ensure the camera points down the normal direction. - ecc7a83798
  • Render fonts from the top. Not necessary anymore after ecc7a83798.
  • Do not generate previews for non-renderable geometry (e.g. meshes without faces, surface without actual surface (are those called faces too?)). Not necessary anymore after ecc7a83798.
  • Add progress bar while generating previews in the background.
  • Allow cancelling preview generation.
  • Use render, not viewport settings for them (e.g. don't use viewport material color, but render one).
  • Correct camera location for surfaces and volumes (seems to fail at getting the volume's visual bounds, think it needs to handle grid coordinates in BKE_object_foreach_display_point()).

Better handle flat surfaces (e.g. planes, circles), could ensure the camera points down the normal direction.

Would be great not just for flat surfaces but for walls, thin assets like dishes, etc. Perhaps at a certain threshold of flattness on the bounding box the camera could orient itself with the appropriate axis.
