System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 3 Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13596 Core Profile Context 20.10.28 27.20.1028.1

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-18 14:57, hash: 898231fdbc

Short description of error
If you have the Image Editor area open in your workspace and set to the Render Result, Render > View Render does not open a new window titled Blender Render, but Render > Render Image does create a new window even though you have the Render Result in your workspace.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
From the default startup, hit F11 to open Blender Render window, hit again to move back to the main window. Split the 3D viewport and open the Image Editor, set to Render Result. Hit F11, and no new window opens up. But hit F12 and a new window still opens with the Render Result even though it is in the workspace.

I'm not sure if you mixed {key F11} and {key F12} in your description or if you have a different keymap. That being said, with the default preference both View > Viewport Render Image and Render > Render Image {key F12} will open a new window. This can be changed in the preferences:

  • Open the preferences (Edit > Preferences)
  • Switch to the Interface tab

In Editors > Temporary Editors > Render In to Keep User Interface or Image Editor.

Was that your problem or did I misunderstand your report?

The Keep User Interface is the option I needed. However with New Window set, the F11 key (View Render) will not open a new window if you have a workspace like this:

But F12 (Render Image) still opens a new window. So somehow F11 (View Render) is detecting that you have the Render Result open in your workspace and doesn't open a new window. They should match behavior.

I see what you mean now, but this wouldn't be considered a bug. View Render intentionally checks if the rendered image is already display.

I personally don't see the practical benefit of always opening a new window. I'm not sure if matching the behavior of {key F12} just for consistency sake would be better than the current implementation. Either way this would be an improvement suggestion / feature request and we don't handle those on the bug tracker. If you think this is something that other people would also consider an improvement, you could create a proposal on right-click select .

Thank you, now I don't have to deal with new window all the time. I can just change to the Rendering tab and hit {key F12}.
