System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.9.11-1-default-x86_64-with-glibc2.17 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon (TM) RX 480 Graphics (POLARIS10, DRM 3.39.0, 5.9.11-1-default, LLVM 11.0.0) X.Org 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.2.3

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-12-03 21:55, hash: cc6ec71b19
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Hair particle systems that have been edited in Particle Edit mode can only be duplicated as linked duplicates in the Particle System list, which means that any further change will not be unique to them. This behavior is unexpected and not documented in the corresponding manual page.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • In the attached .blend file, in the list of particle systems for the only object present in the scene, click "Particle Specials" > Duplicate Particle system
  • The duplicated particle system will be linked to the original one, with no possibility of making the changes unique (single-user copy) without clicking "Delete Edit"

Does this work for you (it is a bit hidden, but should work)?

  • in object mode: click "Particle Specials" > Duplicate Particle system
  • hit {key F9}
  • in the popup, check "Duplicate Settings"

Note there is #83317 (Hair particles duplication with duplicate settings enabled copies all the particles instead of one selected) though, so this might also be a bit problematic

Yes, with "Duplicate Settings" enabled from the hidden F9 menu it appears to work (settings are different for each particle system), but it seems buggy: settings for the duplicated hair system do not visually change in real time, but only for example if I enter/exit the Edit mode (hitting Tab twice on the object).

Just checked out with Blender b369f9348487 (latest 2.92 alpha Linux build)

Can confirm the issue regarding no immediate updates (was also just mentioned in #83317).

To keep sanity, could you report this separately?
Will close this report as resolved then (because we've overcome the "linked-only" issue), OK?
If you create a new report, you can add me as a subscriber directly.
