System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 456.38

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-25 08:34, hash: 0f45cab862
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
align to transform orientation does not work

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I create a cube, rotate it casually (in perspective view), apply a transformation orientation. After i restore "global" and creating another cube, I apply the previous transformation orientation (align to tr.or.) but the new cube does not rotate. simple

Thanks for the report, but I'm not sure I understand the problem. I'm confused by the steps:

  • create a cube,
  • rotate it casually (in perspective view),
  • apply a transformation orientation. (<-- What does this mean?)
  • restore "global"
  • create another cube,
  • apply the previous transformation orientation (<-- Do you mean setting the previous orientation?)
  • align to transform orientation

  • create a cube
  • rotate it casually
  • select a face in edit mode
  • click on "+" in transform orientation (default name is "face")
  • return on global
  • create a new cube
  • "align to transform orientation"

I've just discovered the bug is about automatic selection on the panel: first (2.90) was automatically "face", now (2.91) you have to select it

So does it mean that the problem is different and that this report should be closed?
Even with the steps described I still can't understand the problem.
If you created the Cube in a global orientation, it is already aligned and it is to be expected that the "align to transform orientation" will not make a difference.

but in 2.90 this happens automatically (you have nothing to change)

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender:

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

Go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

I really can't understand: if I use version 2.92 or 2.90 no problem. With 2.91 I always have the same problem, even doing a default reinstall. I think I'll be using 2.92 now, hoping it's stable enough to work

Some fixes have been made in this area.
It is quite possible that the fix will be backported to blender 2.91
