Particle Instance modifier completely broken in 2.9x versions #85323

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 64 bit 24GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GTX 980M 4GB

Blender Version 2.91.2
Broken: 2.91.2.
Worked: 2.83 LTS (or any of the 2.8x versions)

Particle instance modifier not working. Instanced mesh disappears.

Instancing an object with particle instance on a mesh makes it disappear instead of applying it on the particles. Rotation, location and scale are applied and set to default for both objects. Settings won't help. Instanced mesh completely disappears, setting its scale to 0 and becoming selectable only from the outliner.

This is the same as #83886 (Particle instance modifier broken).

There was a change that kind of "broke" old files (amount was always set to zero).
This was fixed to not happen in new files again.

To work around this in a new file, set the Amount in the modifier to 1 (or whatever is right for you -- just dont leave it at zero).
