There are typically a few new features for each release that need an icon. We can collect them here and make sure they are added before the release (before Bcon3 really).

Currently missing:

  • Geometry Nodes Editor

  • Line art modifier

  • Attribute domains {F10162715 size=full}

    • Face corner icon is using a node snapping icon
    • Points probably shouldn't have a line
    • An icon for curve control points would be great
  • Asset icon (? Could re-use the Asset Browser icon, but rather have a dedicated one)

  • Asset Browser "Unassigned" catalog item

  • Asset Browser "All" catalog tree item (? Could also just be a regular parent item)

  • Asset Browser "Open Blend File" button

  • Blender File (FILE_BLEND currently uses the Blender logo, which is wrong)

Sculpt tools:
Postponed for the next release.

    • Mask Filter Tool
    • Scene Project Brush Tool

@ChauHo there are no guidelines yet for the icon style. We need the people who make most contributions there to help out. The Human Interface Guidelines are not active yet, and we generally don't share the link publicly yet to avoid confusion.

This looks like a general sculpt tool icon? We are not missing a "sculpt tool" icon currently. Only specific tools for sculpt mode that have no icon yet.

@CreatorSiSo I like the general idea of Your concept. Will try to polish it and make it fit both: the icon matrix and the set style.

I think this could be in the right direction. The only issue is that a cube and a sphere makes me think more of object-level nodes, so this could be used in the future for other node setups (such as Collection Nodes).

How about something like that but instead of a Cube and a Sphere, use Mesh and Volume data icons, @jendrzych? To communicate that volumes can also be edited in Geometry Nodes. Technically Curves will also be possible to edit in Geometry Nodes, but Volume indicates the possibilities better.

@jendrzych Nice! I think the left-most icon is my favorite.

Is there a requirement to show node noodles inside the icon? The Shader Editor is node-based but its icon is more symbolic. An equivalent for the geometry nodes icon could be something that says "algorithm/computational design".

edit: I'll try to come up with an idea as soon as humanly possible.

edit2: here is the icon I came up with. I followed the duo-tone look from the icons inside of the Generate modifiers list.

Shouldn't there also be an icon for the "geometry nodes" node group?

PS: It would be super helpful to have guidelines on how to best design the icons. I noticed that Blender applies some auto-tinting on the modifiers icons and I don't know how to accommodate that.

Another important icon that is missing is FILE_BLEND. Currently using the Blender logo but that's not allowed.

Perhaps something like FILE_CACHE (middle) but instead of the cog (which is also weird), the Blender logo.

.exe files could use a proper icon in the file browser.

The transition icon here is a temp icon and all of the effect strips are missing icons:

Were the overlap modes intended to be exposed as icon buttons(working as radio buttons)?

@ChauHo - please look at the current icons carefully, they are 16x16 pixels with the main content within 14x14 pixels boundaries.

So, the source file should look like this:

file_blend.svg

Preview:

file-blend-preview.png

Mockup:

file-blend-mockup.png

And so you can see the current one is more consistent with other file icons.
By the way, there is also an icon for "blend1" files.

When setting up a path to ex. ffmpeg in an add-on, it is very useful to distinguish which files are the exe files.

@Yevgeny Makarov (jenkm) Thanks for information. I guess have 32 x 32 pixel icon version for high resolution screen too.

In b.chat there was also a discussion about having an svg file icon, now that they're getting more integrated thanks to GP (right now they are using the generic FILE_3D, same as obj and other IO formats).

Since we already have a lot of similar icons with curves and handles I was thinking about something like this maybe, similar (lazily similar) to the image icon:

For the record:
We discussed the Blender icon usage further in the chat, since we have to get this sorted out for the 3.0 release - Ton pointed out that we misuse the Blender logo and asked us to address this.

We've settled on the following changes for now:

  • Add a new "Current File" icon for use in the Asset Browser (we may want to use this in the Outliner too) image.png
  • Change the .blend file icon to contain a file icon with the Blender logo, as suggested above. I used a version slightly different from what @ChauHo sent above, to make the Blender icon have the same size as the clog in the cache file icon. image.png
  • The backup file icon was changed accordingly. image.png However, 1) I don't think it works that great at the default size with regular DPI screens, 2) the outline logo violates the logo usage guidelines so we should move away from it. So this needs further attention.

That is a remaining issue that would be good to address at some point. IMO the current file icons should be corrected, they simply reuse the data-block icons. Blender data-blocks and files should be clearly differentiated to avoid confusion about them. We should have dedicated icons for the file types, and I think following the pattern of a file icon + a superimposed type icon can work. We have quite some constraints, mostly the available space and the monochrome design bring a challenge. If needed we can experiment with increasing row height slightly, so bigger icons can be used.

Pre-2.8 icons did a pretty good job here BTW 🙂 : image.png

Either way, addressing all this can be quite time consuming. We need somebody to take this over.

Hey all, my name is Liam--I would like to contribute to the UX team

I saw the tasks included adding a dedicated 'Asset' icon, apart from the 'Asset Library' icon. I thought this could work for. Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear any feedback you have as well :) Screen Shot 2022-05-26 at 21.08.33.png
