Material Properties->Copy To Selected does not work #85417

System Information
Operating system: macOS 11.2
Graphics card:

Blender Version
Broken: 2.92

Short description of error
There are two options to copy the current material to multiple object. One of them is "Copy Material To Selected" located within the "Material Specials" button. It works. The other is "Copy To Selected" available by right clicking the name of the material. It does not seem to do anything or I do not understand how to use it. If it is the latter then perhaps the option's title "Copy To Selected" should be reconsidered.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup, create a cube, assign it a material. Create several more objects and select them all, right-click the material's name, select Copy To Selected. Nothing happens.

This can be a bit misleading, yes.

What happens is that the underlying property in this case is in fact the Active Material Index in the UI list (so if you have e.g. 3 material slots, and the middle one is active, the property value would be 2).
And copying this to other selected objects actually works (if they have 2 or more material slots and any other than the second is active for them, it would be after doing Copy To Selected).
This is not meant to actually create a missing material slot and assign the material.

For the intended task, Copy Material To Selected is really the way to go.

Afraid this is just the way it works (and working as intended), will have to close since this is not a bug (not saying there is not room for improvement).
(feel free to comment again though if issues persist)

@lichtwerk okay, it is not a bug, but should be renamed then, to correspond to action.
Such flaws as bad as bugs, because they lead to wrong/unexpected result.

Question is: what is the more descriptive term than Copy To Selected?
Copy Property Value To Selected -- would that keep us from thinking it might create a material slot and assign the material?

@lichtwerk IMO «Value» is too abstract for user.
The most descriptive as what it actually do. It selects material slot with same index/order as active for all selected objects.
As far as user do not see any indexes, we should not reference em. User see order of materials.

May be «Select same slot for selected » as option
and for tool tip something like «Set active material slot with same index for all selected objects».

@Vyach : that operator is for very general use (it is not only for usage in materials, you can basically do this on any property -- with some limitations such as reported here)

@lichtwerk oh, I see, one name for all…
Then, it is better to not change it, to avoid confusion in another sections.…
Because there can be not only value, but color for example.
But it requires few words in manual, so ppl can google it at least.
Or this topic.
