The boolean node does not work as expected and also often crashes.

In 2.92 the "boolean node" does not work at all. For example if you make a cube and a sphere, and then setup a Point Distribution -> Point Instance using the cubes all over the sphere. Then try to do a boolean "difference" it does not work and only shows the original sphere (does not cut out the cubes). See Example: cubes_not_cutout

In 2.93 the above example works as expected (See Example: cubes_cut_working), however once added more complexity to your geometry blender becomes very slow, often crashes and boolean stops working after if you chain more than 1 boolean together.

In this case I'm creating some sprinkles and balls on top of a donut. Then I'm replicate the sprinkles and balls, scaling them up and joining them together. Then using the scaled sprinkles to cut out the original icing mesh and then joining it all back together. So that the sprinkles look like they have made indentations around them in the icing.

Sorry I can't seem to reproduce the crash reliably.

But you can see the boolean issue by opening up the donut.blend file and see that geometry nodes on the donut icing does not produce an expected result.

You'd expect the result to be a geometry where there is:

  • Icing
  • Indents in the ice from the scaled sprinkles
  • The sprinkles

Actual result:

  • Icing is totally missing
  • Only sprinkles showing

This appears to be a problem with the boolean not liking that some of the sprinkles intersect each other and that breaks the whole thing.

The performance is also really slow. It takes a few minutes for me to open the file and each setting change takes several minutes.

Normally .blend files can be simplified by removing most objects and disabling settings, until the problem reveals itself more clearly.
