System Information
Operating system: Win 10 20H2
Graphics card: 3070
Blender Version
Broken: (2.92.0)
Worked: (No idea when it did)
Short description of error
The windows store version of blender does not install what's necessary so that the preview thumbnail is shown.
I don't think my normal version of blender (manual installer) also worked but, i'm primarily using the windows store version now.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Just install blender through windows store, however completely wipe all files necessary from previous version's, cause it could be that the previous install associated .blend with the preview thumbnail.

In order for that to work you just need to run blender once with the "-r" command-line argument as described here: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/arguments.html
It would nice to add that as an option somewhere in Preferences though.

Did @Harley tip solve the problem?
To run blender from the command line you can see https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/launch/windows.html
I have managed it with the command line extension, the process was a bit odd thou.
Windows apps are located in a weird location that is protected, first i had to make hidden files visible, then go to program files and WindowsApps, small issue here is that the WindowsApp folder is protected and you cant access it unless you take ownership of the folder and all the files in it, which is a hassle, then i had to navigate to the folder within which had blender in its name, then i opened the powershell in that said folder typed in blender.exe with the extension.
Then it registered successfully.
I agree with harley that there could/should be a button in the settings window of blender to do this file registration without a hassle (for someone who doesn't know their way around a Windows PC would no doubt be confused by the process and a one button solution would help a lot), if possible.

That's awesome you can do it.
I agree that it is a pain, and I am sorry about that. We don't really want that association running automatically because we have so very many users who run multiple versions and want control over it.
So I will close this as "resolved" but I'll also do my best to get us a button in Properties as soon as I can.
No problem, just doing my miniscule contributions :P
Thank you for your effort :)
