System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 466.27

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-05-08 19:53, hash: 9569a522f2

Behavior changed in fd3e44492e

Short description of error
Probably caused by the latest animation player commits. The colors of a PNG sequence look washed out

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Play a PNG sequence (or maybe other types of animation files too?) in the animation player
Compare with older versions of Blender

So this is caused by fd3e44492e and all sounds like intended behavior.

I am a bit confused though because the commit message talks about float images mostly and

Right now defaults are assumed for device given for
COLOR_ROLE_DEFAULT_BYTE. This should produce same behavior as
implemented before.

and I dont see Colormanagement settings having any influence on the display as well as this is clearly a change in behavior.

Maybe @iss or @Sergey can shed some light on this?
Tagging Render & Cycles because of colormanagment.

This wasn't intended, as said in commit message this change should produce same results as before. At least perceptually as GLSL may be lower quality. Only performance should be different.
