When editing NLA strip that's cut, it reverts to orignal size #89464

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 460.89

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When having an action. adding it as an NLA strip. And splitting it up (y). When you then edit it (tab) and unedit, it'll revert to it's original length.
Additionally having split an action up, you can't rename it, so you'll be left with an action name like Animation_forward**.002**

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Animate the cube a bit for 20 frames, have plenty of keyframes.
In the action editor add it as an nlm strip.
In nlm editor, split it up on the middle. Remove the surrounding strips, so you're left with a strip starting later and ending earlier than the original.
Edit it by pressing tab.
leave edit mode by pressing tab again.
Now it's back to it's original size

This is because of the Sync Length option

image.png

Since all parts still reference the same action with all of its keyframes, it will hop back to the full length after editing (with this option turned on).
Disable that and you should be fine.

#89464.blend

This option might not be the best default in a ll scenarios -- {key y} splitting being one of them -- (it was introduced in eda757d4c8 and made default in 6074636387), but dont think this would be considered a bug.

Raising awareness to @wbmoss_dev anyways.

@STANN.co: Does disabling the option do the trick for you?

Thanks Philipp.

That is the simple work around for now. There is already a tiny patch D10168: Fix #84486: Nla Disable "Sync Length" After Split too.

Renaming strips after splitting also works fine for me.

@wbmoss_dev : thx, I should have known ;) -- was involved with the other ticket as well...

So this ticket can then be merged into #84486 (When a strip is cut and edited in nla editor, the strip returns to its original length without the cut. blender 2.92 alpha)
