Can confirm. Possibly caused by the commit 3b6ee8cee7

Guess this is expected because message will be displayed after opening the file in older versions: File written by newer Blender binary (300.11), expect loss of data!

Similar issues has been reported before:

  • #89870 (Vertex groups are lost if I save a file in 3.0 and open in 2.92 without warnings)
  • #90441 (File that was saved in 3.0 and after opened in 2.93.X will lose his vertex group data)

Looking at the ISS's comment from #90441 I think the current behavior is expected. (Report can be closed I guess but will wait for others to check this)

Is there a way to get this back, cos even linking or appending the collection doesn't bring vertex groups

remember 3.0 is not meant for production yet, there are warning banners for a reason. As a workaround you could export your model in 3.0 and import it in 2.93 using some fileformat which captures vertex groups data.

Ah Thanks.

I was testing it out, but mistakenly saved over my most recent update, and so far, it isn't nearly as stable, so I've been looking for a way to bring over my changes into 2.93.

It seems we have to close this, afaics there will not be ways to restore these (except for the workaround @HDMaster84 mentioned).

I fixed mine by creating a new file and appending all the mesh into the new file. the vertex groups were all there
