Slow camera view navigation in Cycles rendered shading mode with many instances #92233

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 471.68

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-10-13 21:57, hash: 9dff3de6ac
Worked: 2.93

Short description of error
When looking through camera and navigating the viewport (with Lock Camera to View for example), the movement is much slower than a regular perspective view. This happens in rendered shading mode with Cycles, when many object instances are in the scene. Instances can be generated with Geometry Nodes or the old particle system. Also they don't even have to be visible on screen, you could be looking at a single cube somewhere to the side, and the camera navigation will still be slow.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Use the provided file
  • Switch to rendered mode and disable overlays
  • Try looking around
  • Switch to camera view

Navigation should be much slower and unresponsive

I don't seem to experience this on the latest build. Can you try that to see if it is fixed for you?

I tried today's build (452c78757f) and the problem is still there.
It also happens when using CPU to render, so it's probably unrelated to GPU drivers or something like that.

I can confirm a performance decrease when moving the camera compared to just moving around the viewport

It looks like the same problem reported in #93976 and #97721.
I'll merge the other reports in this one, since this is confirmed.
