System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 471.96

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.93.5, branch: master, commit date: 2021-10-05 12:04, hash: a791bdabd0
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
[Please fill out a short description of the error here]

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
This bug happens on 2.93.5 and later (tested also on the latest blender-3.0.0-beta+v30.56ee96349dce-windows.amd64-release)

After I set up the material nodes, if I need to replace one of the textures, the color space goes back to the default sRGB.

The images attached show the same node before and after I replaced the texture in it.

Actually, the same issue happens with any texture in a displaced modifier.

The colorspace is part of the image, not part of the node. So when you change the image, it changes too (not to the default, but to the value for the current image).

That's the thing, the color space changes to the wrong one. If I load a normal map image, the color space goes back to sRGB. Is that the supposed behavior? If so, it's rather confusing.

It happens to me as long as I can remember and it's VERY annoying. I'd rather have the color space stay as it was set by the user. The only time it seems to be working properly is when loading EXR files, but they are linear by nature and easy to determine.

This automatic guessing changed in 7ad802cf3a.
It has caused confusion, it is debatable, it has been reported before:

  • #70688 (Image Texture Node UI resets Color Space)
  • #69244 (color space turns back to default preset sRGB when changing texture in shader editor)
  • #66985 (Texture color space in shader editor resets every time i import textures)
  • #68047 (Found a bug during shading process)

but it has not been considered a bug.
So thx reporting, will merge this with #66985.

I understand the idea behind the feature, but it clearly doesn't work in it's current state. I have texture maps with names finishing with _metallic, _roughness and _normal and each of my image texture nodes gets resetted to sRGB when loading those in. Having the option to disable this automatic color space guessing in the preferences window would be a blessing.
