Short description of error
Hello, this scene used to have a good performance but now it's very slow in Blender 3.0 and 3.1.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
five_sided v001_005.blend
Please load the attached scene.
Switch to layout tab and try scrubbing the timeline.
It is unusably slow in current 3.0 version but it will perform as expected in the aforementioned Beta.

Can't reproduce this issue. With ab7214ca2e I get 0.5fps, same with 3.0 release. Can you specify what is performance you see in these builds?

Sorry I did not switch to release build and tested debug. Did not occur to me since performance was same as 3.0 release.

This seems to be result of 4f246b8bf9. Now message Warning: Maximum instance recursion level reached. is printed in system console.

Will confirm since I am not sure if performance problem like this was considered.

I can confirm that the warning reduces performance by a lot in this scene. However, I don't really think that's a bug, since the scene really has reached the maximum instance depth, and there's not much we can do about that at the moment.

There are some vague plans to refactor this code to remove the need for an instance depth limit, I think this would be improved with that.

In the meantime, muting one of the instance on points nodes resolves the performance issue. A realize instances node at the end of the node tree is also an option.

I just added a note to the instances section of the geometry nodes manual about this limitation.
