Two Different M1 Mac minis BOTH Crash Whenever using Cycles In 3.1 Alpha #95143

System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.0.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Apple M1 Apple 4.1 Metal - 76.1

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-01-22 00:20, hash: 1f026a3db9
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Whenever my viewport is in RENDERED VIEW I can use Eevee and scroll around my viewport just fine.
When I switch to Cycles on CPU renderer I can still scroll around just fine.
The problem arises when switching cycles to GPU mode WHILE my viewport is on Rendered View. This is when my entire computer shuts down.
I select both the Apple M1 and Apple M1 (GPU) option in system preferences when using Cycles.

My Girlfriend and I both bought each other M1 16g ram Mac minis for Christmas so we can learn 3d animation with Blender (LOVE WHAT YOU GUYS DO) and she has the same exact issue.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I believe this issue may be specific to M1 Macs Or Just The M1 Mac Minis. To experience this bug. You must:

  • put your viewport in any view mode except for the rendered view.
  • Select Cycles As your Renderer,
  • Switch Cycles To GPU,
  • Select Apple M1 GPU in System presences,
  • reselect Cycles GPU to confirm,
  • Then switch your viewport to rendered view
    then it should crash.
I have downloaded Demo files from blender and it crashes with every project I open. I create new files on my own and try to see if it still crashes and it always does.
The work around is to use eevee until it is time to render. when it is time to render you must put your viewport to anything except for rendered view and then select cycles gpu. after that I can render my project in cycles using my gpu.
I just can't use my viewport while in cycles gpu

I cannot replicate the problem.
I tested it with the default Cube.
Are you sure any file can be used to replicate the crash?
I enabled both Apple M1 and Apple M1 (GPU) as "Cycles Render Devices"

System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Apple M1 Apple 4.1 Metal - 76.3

I was having the same issue with the same Mac M1, updating to macOS 12.1 fixed the issue for me. Hope this helps.

@Michael-Jones, (I see you are working on the Cycles Metal implementation), is Metal supposed to work in pre 12.1 versions?
As version 12.0.1 is reported to crash, would it be good to limit support in this version?

There are some driver fixes which are landing in macOS 12.2 which are needed for strict correctness. However since 12.2 isn't currently in general circulation I was planning to make this commit closer to the Blender 3.1 release.

Thanks for the info @Michael-Jones

Since Cycles Metal is still under development, and the reported crash can be resolved by updating the macOS, I'm closing this ticket.

@Ari_isDrawing, if the problem persists, please let us know so we can re-open the report. Don't forget to mention the specific version you tested again.

@mano-wii I'm still getting this same bug after updating my OS to 12.3.1. Tried rolling back to previous versions as well as different settings. Nothing working so far.

Blender Version: 3.1.2
Mac OS: 12.3.1
MacBook Pro M1 Max ARM-64
