Short description of error
Writing to Vertex Groups from Geometry Nodes is not working anymore, even if the attribute is displayed correctly in the spreadsheet

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the attached file in the broken versions and you will not see any Vertex group change, but if you open it in the old version you will see the weights from GN

Note that this is not technically supported behavior. Writing to vertex groups mostly worked accidentally before, therefore this behavior can't be relied upon in the long term.
However, given that this is quite easy to "fix", I'll do that. The other fix was not expected to change other behavior.

Thanks for taking a look at this and fixing it. Just to comment, I know this is a deprecated workflow, but , until we can drive other modifiers with attributes created on the fly, or have them in the form of nodes, this is a handy hack. For cloth sim for example.
