Short description of error
In the last two months, I have purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and have been running the latest version of Blender on it in Windows 11. Overall the computer is great and I have no issues with other programs but Blender keeps freezing and being unresponsive. I have no alternative but to shut it down every time using the Task Manager. At first I thought it might have been a corrupt file but all the Blender files that run fine on my Surface Pro 3 are subject to intermittent freezing when I open them on the Surface Pro 7. I have updated all my drivers and run all updates but I can't seem to fix it. I notice that my Blender version says "Broken" but I don't know what to do about this. I have reloaded Blender at least six times and the fault keeps replicating itself.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
The fault doesn't seem to have an exact pathway. All I have been doing the last couple of times is rotating the item called Cylinder.001 in the attached file and it has frozen. i have attached a screenshot of it freezing{F12850610}

[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Do you notice any unusual resource usage in the task manager when this happens? In particular, the memory usage.
Can you try other versions of Blender and check if the problem persists?
What do you mean by "notice that my Blender version says Broken"? Where does it say that?
Hi Omar,
I've had the same issue with the two prior releases unfortunately. The reference to Blender being broken is in the Blender Version information above. I don't know if that is just an auto-generated thing, sorry. I will try to replicate the issue and screenshot the Task Manager information so you can see memory usage.
Many thanks
Neil
You should also try the latest daily build, maybe the issue was already resolved. https://builder.blender.org/download/
Hi Omar
It just froze again, here is the view from Task Manager as I'm doing it. Is this the view you need? I will try the latest daily build.
There are 4 options for the daily build. I'm not sure which to pick. I'm also concerned about messing up my files.
@Granty Download the "Blender 3.2.0 - Alpha" build. This is a portable build, so it will not mess with your files and will not require installation.
Hi Omar,
I downloaded the alpha build and it froze immediately. Here's the screenshot with the task manager up.
{F12854028}Hi Omar
I've been freezing it again and it appears to be the GPU that is exceeding 100% then crashing. Is this a problem with Blender, my GPU or my set-up do you think? Screen shot attached.
Hi Omar
I just ran the same file on the Surface Pro 3 and got the same high GPU usage but no freezing, so maybe that's not it. Sorry
Can you try older Blender release and see if any of them works? https://download.blender.org/release/
Hi Omar
It seems to be working in 2.91 without crashing. I'll play with it some more today and let you know.
Hi Omar
I've not been able to replicate the issue in 2.91. Shall I just work my way up the versions until I crash?

That would be good to know, but I am not sure how to debug this further, so I will leave that to someone on a similar stack.

There is a known issue with the latest drivers for Intel Iris CPUs. See #86778 (Viewport Slowdown on 11th gen Intel Xe graphics).
Downgrading the driver has been reported to work around the problem in some cases.
Closed as duplicate of #86778
Thanks Germano, I went to the Intel site. These drivers are for Windows 10. Will it matter if I use them with Windows 11?
