System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: RTX 2070

Blender Version
3.1

Short description of error

Overrides gets reverted in armature after reopening file. And it keeps the animation data. File attached + Video with the Behavior. It used to be ok in versions before 3.0/3.1. It also does not happen with all files. It's random/unpredictable.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Link the collection SOLDIER DEFAULT LINK to a blend file.
  2. Add a library override to it (Object > Relations > Make Library Override)
  3. Add an override to Armature CAP RIG Soldier Default (key Shift Click} the link icon in the Armature tab in the Properties Editor.
  4. Save and reopen the file

Aye, I'm having the same problem. Been working on some animations in the last few days. And they reset every time I close and re-open the file... It's really annoying, as I need to do stuff like reverting to an auto-save, and then append some of the missing animations from a newer file. But when I close it and re-open - I need to do it again. And I'm not sure when will I lose my animations altogether :(

@satishgoda1 Did you do that to both armatures? Here one armature is ok (Lancelot Armature), but the other one (CAP RIG) appears as if the override was not applied to armature datablock when I reopen the file.

The overriden link even appears in the dropdown, but it I save and reopen the file, it gets in the same way. The library override is kept. But the individual override gets reverted.

Actually, this seems fixed in 3.2.
Can you confirm using a 3.2 alpha build from https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/?

At least for me 3.2 doesn't work either. I tried 2.93 too, but then my actions were missing altogether due to them being saved in a newer version.

@lichtwerk It works in 3.2. But if I reopen it in 3.1 it happens again. Even if the file was created on 3.2.

@WereElf I think what you are showing in the video is slightly different. Your actions are disappearing because they are not assigned to a fake user.

@artutava thanks for the information. I haven't seen the requirement to do that in the tutorials I've watched, so I didn't know it was required. :P

This was fixed by 1695d38989 btw.
And apparently was never working before (at least it wasnt in 3.1, 3.1.1, 3.0.1 or 2.93.8)
So seems like there is no way to get this working in 3.1 or earlier (@mont29 : correct me if I am wrong) and to my knowledge, there will not be another corrective release for 3.1.
3.2 will be out June 8.

So since this is now fixed in 3.2 (and apparently not much can be done about 3.1), will close as resolved.

We have been working for a month on a scene with nla for shape key actions… after reopening the files now to render I just noticed All actions are gone. Using 3.1…. I think this is a very important problem to be solved, in terms of pipeline. Its a pity its not in 3.1.1.

It's happening in 4.1. Individual overrides get reverted after reopening the files.

Blender 4.1

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Link a character (Collection).
  2. Make Library Overrides.
  3. Override Armature and Mesh (To access shapekey data)
  4. Save
  5. Reopen the file

Here's the character file attached:
