System Information
Operating system: macOS-10.15.7-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M OpenGL Engine NVIDIA Corporation 4.1 NVIDIA-14.0.32 355.11.11.10.10.143

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-31 17:40, hash: cc66d1020c

Short description of error
Blender crashes when I have the shading viewport selected if there is a light in the scene and I orbit the window with the middle mouse button for a few seconds.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
1.- Open a "general" scene of blender.
2.- Delete the default camera.
3.- Active the Cycles render engine in the render properties tab.
4.- Orbir with the Middle button the shading scene viewport (it should then crash)

Thanks for the report. I can not get the crash with your provided steps.
Maybe similar as reported in #96133 (MacOS desktop freeze and crash on 3.1 beta up to 3.2.2 when moving mesh in Cycles Rendered view (Cycles CPU mode))
Can you upload crash logs?: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#crash-log

It seems like MacOS decided to kill Blender because it uses too much CPU, so it doesn't seem to be a bug in Blender. I don't understand why MacOS would do that or if there is a setting to adjust for it.
Perhaps this is due to some kind of power saving mode? Can you check if anything like that is activated?

Hello,
Thanks for your help. No, I don't have any power saving preferences enabled on the Mac. Sure enough, when I start orbiting the viewport shading with cycles the activity monitor shows me very high CPU usage values, the fan fires and Blender crashes. Isn't it a problem of excess heat? Here's a screenshot so you can see for yourself. Thanks again for your help.

I see. I still don't know why MacOS would do that. So I will leave that to someone with Mac experience.

@oloman, could you get and attach a blender crash log from the macOS console.app (crash reports section)?

See instructions here: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#crash-log

I am curious to see if it shows the same symptoms as in #96133 (crash within com.apple.GeForceGLDriver - gldModifyTexSubImage).

Thanks @oloman but the file you attached seems to be some sort of profiling/heavy cpu usage diagnostic log rather than a direct app crash log, is there no ˋBlender*.crash` (instead of .diag) file under ˋ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ˋ ?

From the description this sounds exactly like #96133 (MacOS desktop freeze and crash on 3.1 beta up to 3.2.2 when moving mesh in Cycles Rendered view (Cycles CPU mode)), I see nothing to indicate this is related to CPU / memory usage.
