System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22000-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.15

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-04-05 23:33, hash: 931ae424b9
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Tweak or the selection box can't select a curve from either side of a plane with just a click. The invisible draggable handles are selectable though.
Screen Shot 04-07-22 at 10.55 AM.PNG

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I have a plane on the grid. Then add a curve to the scene. After that using the tweak or select box tool try to select the middle of the curve with a left mouse click. It can't be selected even though the plane has no thickness and the curve can clearly be seen on either side of the plane. The curve should be able to be selected as you can see it. It can be selected near the edges only. Somehow the plane is above the line even if rotating the plane to see the underside. The cursor is not changing either on a mouse over to show from where it is clickable. The handles don't change color either on the mouse over. The draggable handles are clickable even when they are invisible. It would be great if you could fix this as it is difficult to select stuff if multiple points are close as well.

[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]
can't select curve on plane on either side.blend

Hi, thanks for the report.
You're in edit mode in your file. In edit mode, you can only select control points and handles of curve (not the actual segment).
If clicking on segment doesn't select curve in object mode then that could be an issue. Otherwise it's not a bug.

I wish Blender was easier to use T-T.
Yes, clicking on the segment area doesn't select the curve in object mode.
I have to switch to object mode to select the plane or curver first each time then go into edit mode to edit the points. There is no indication of the selectable area on a mouse over either (cursor change or handle color change).
If you select something in the Scene Collection it changes in Object Mode but nothing changes when edit mode is set there as well.

Hi, thanks for getting back

Yes, clicking on the segment area doesn't select the curve in object mode.

I'm able to select curve by clicking over the segment.

I have to switch to object mode to select the plane or curver first each time then go into edit mode

This is expected, no?
Can you upload the screen recording of the issue just to ensure that we are discussing the same thing :)

No activity for more than a week. As per the tracker policy we assume the issue is gone and can be closed.

Thanks again for the report. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.

Yes, the problem is still there. Sorry for the late reply. I forgot to get back to this.

I'm having trouble understanding the problem.
The curve is in edit mode. And in this mode only the handles are selectable.

The report does not describe well the steps to reproduce the problem.
A good description would be something like this:

  • Open attached .blend file
  • Click and drag to activate box select and select something....

Please create a new report, or update the description of the one here.

A guideline for making a good bug report can be found at https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Process/Bug_Reports

Sorry for the super late reply. My M.2 drive died on my main PC and I've just got a new drive. I'll post the steps and a file straight after I reinstall Windows and Blender.

Hi Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii),

Sorry for the super late reply. I cloned an older copy of Windows from an SSD to the new M2 stick and had problems so I had to do a total clean reinstall of Windows after that :/ Everything is good now though.

Below are the instructions and 2 new test files.

Case 1:

In object mode add a curve > Bezier from the viewport Add text menu.

Then in object mode again add a mesh > plane.

test 1.blend

Select the mesh plane using the box select tool and then try clicking the curve near the control point.

Sometimes the curve isn't selectable.

I think the snap radius of the control point becomes the unselectable bit on either side of the curve and also the center depending on what you have done to the curve when drawing move complex models.

If you could fix the snap area so it is selectable it would be great. And also give some indicator when we mouseover that items are selectable like a cursor icon change or the points/lines highlighting.

Case 2:

In object mode add a curve > Bezier from the viewport Add text menu.

Then in object mode again add a mesh > plane.

Use the move tool to move the curve so that the curve is not in the center of the plane but is still on the plane.

test 2.blend

Select the edge of the mesh plane using the box select tool (object mode) and then try clicking the curve near the snapping part of the control point.

Again the curve is unselectable or it takes a few clicks to select it. Especially around the curves control point snap area for some reason.

Hopefully that will help you find the bug.

If you could fix this unselectable bit it would be great.

Also if there is a mouse over effect then we can clearly see when stuff is selectable or not.

In edit mode if the transform tool shows up when we selected stuff it would be great as well. Just now when we use box select and points are selected, just say in edit mode when using a Bezier curve, we always have to select a tool to do something. If the transform icon just showed up in edit mode on points when we selected them it would let us easily do something. Even if multiple points we selected.

Also thank you for also giving me a bit of time to fix my PC.

Regards,

I think you should record a video showing the problem.
The image in the report shows the edit mode.
But description in last comment doesn't mention edit mode, (however it mentions "control points").
Snap and selection are different things, I think you meant selection threshold, or minimum selection distance.

I can see a problem in the file: "the selection of wire objects is difficult if these objects are in front of meshes with surface".
This can be considered a Bug or Known Issue since in fact if we compare older versions of Blender (like 2.79), the selection actually got a little worse for these objects.
But in this case it is better to create another report.

I found a good open source screen recorder and I'll try recording the problem and uploading it here.

Also sorry if my explanation wasn't super clear. I've been doing CAD and rendering for over 30 years but I'm pretty new to all the Blender terms.

Animation.gif
This is the first video just showing how difficult it is to select the line.

How do I record it and show the mouse clicks? Know of a good free screen recorder?
