System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14802 Core Profile Context 21.Q4 30.0.14011.2006

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-31 17:40, hash: cc66d1020c

Short description of error
Viewport and render displayed Black and white pixels in places that should not be black or white when rendering using HIP. On the attached image, the mushroom shows it best and is a hotspot for these broken pixels. Switching to CPU rendering fixed the issue.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]
*Open attached blend file
*Set rendering to 'HIP' in preferences, switch to GPU compute for rendering
*In rendered view in the viewport, there will be black + white error pixels. The more samples are used, the more of these pixels are visible.
*Rendering the image has the same result.

Hi, thanks for the report.
Can you try again with updated GPU drivers?: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-6000-series/amd-radeon-6600-series/amd-radeon-rx-6600-xt
Also test in latest blender development builds: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily

Hey,

I did some experimenting, turning HIP on and off for both CPU and GPU rendering in the blender version from the original report after updating my drivers. The strange pixels only appear when using GPU rendering with HIP turned on for the GPU. GPU rendering without HIP works fine, as well as any rendering with the CPU. I tested this again in the 3.2 beta, and the same pattern was apparent, that this problem only happens when the GPU is rendering with HIP acceleration.

@ThomasDinges hi, can you reproduce this with your AMD GPU?

Edit: I can confirm this, but needed to render a few samples to see it.

Could not reproduce with OptiX or CUDA, so assuming it's specific to HIP.

CC @BrianSavery @sayakAMD.

This is the environment texture I used in the scene, it's an HRDI from polyhaven. mossy_forest_4k.exr

I can not reproduce this issue on a RX 7800XT on Windows with Blender 3.3.18, 3.6.11, or 4.1.0. I could not test Blender 3.1.2 or many older drivers because my GPU is unsupported there.
This has likely been fixed with HIP SDK updates used in newer version of Blender and/or GPU driver updates.
@ThomasDinges can you double check to confirm this issue is gone?

I cannot reproduce it anymore as well with Blender 4.1.1. Thanks for checking @Alaska
