Can confirm.

Will add #animation_rigging since this indeed only seems to be a problem with posemode.
(not even sure about the special meaning XRay seems to have in posemode? Need to check, but when you have XRay on generally, then switch to posemode, this is first OFF, you can then enable it "again"?)

So apparently this is more or less expected?

XRay in posemode triggers this 6d155dc462

Bone selection overlay is only available in pose mode.
and when active overrules the selection buffer.

I am not an animator, thus not really sure what this is for.
Afaict, it is also not documented.

But @dr.sybren or @Jeroen-Bakker would probably know more...

(Apparently it populates objects of the MESH type as well).

Ok, the original usecase for the pose mode bone selection layer was a case for animators. Selecting bones when posing a character...

Still not totally clear to me, maybe this should be in the manual?

More uncertainty in another task:

I don't know what the original or current intended design is for "Show Bone X-Ray", but I wish that all enabling it did was to make the viewport and selection act as if all pose mode armatures' "In Front" option was enabled.

Even before this bug, this was not the case, because when Show Bone X-Ray was disabled, and In Front was enabled, trying to select bones that were behind the mesh would fail, which would be very frustrating, since in this case there is no visual difference between Show Bone X-Ray being On or Off. You would just know that it's off because half of your selection attempts are failing.

That option was not always called "Show Bone X-Ray", before it was called "Bone selection overlay".
Apparently this feature is being used in a different way than it was designed for and now it's just doubling the X-Ray feature.
