System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 516.59

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-06-08 10:22, hash: e05e1e3691
Worked: Not known

Alembic Export don´t export Vertex Colors ( Color Attributes )
imagen.png

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • paint some VC on the default cube with Vertex Paint Mode,
  • Export the cube.
  • Make sure you've the "Color Attributes" checkbox on
  • Reimport the Alembic file
check that your VC aren't there.
NOTE: The attached file works because the domain is Face Corner in it.

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender.
Here the Color Attribute was imported correctly.

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

Tested on blender-3.3.0-alpha+master.e86c2f728872-windows.amd64-release
Here my model :
VC_Bug_01.jpg
Here my Alembic Export Settings:
VC_Bug_02.jpg
New blender and Alembic Import Settings:
VC_Bug_03.jpg
Result, no Color Attributes:
imagen.png

I can´t share my file, but i can confirm no Color Attributes can be imported here. Maybe its an issue with Hipoly models ( mine has 178 Million tris ).
Another hint i can give is that i´m using Sculpt Mode Paint instead of Vertex Paint Mode, for performance reasons.
And simple cube fails again with these settings:

Then when i try re-import:

I've double-checked all the settings, but I still can't replicate the problem.

In order to be able to forward the bug to the developers, we need to first confirm (and perhaps better identify) the issue.

Are you sure you can replicate the problem with the attached file?

Please go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you can reproduce the issue.

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

I tested it again and now I can repro the problem.
The color attribute went completely white after I imported the *.abc file.
I don't know why it worked before.
This must be effect of attribute generalization (maybe 1998269b10).
It's a regression, I'll try to identify where the problem was introduced.

I made a mistake in the tests.
I forgot to check the "Color Attributes" option when exporting.

Seeing the image below, I think I've identified your problem:
imagen.png

What is happening is that Alembic does not support export attributes other than "Face Corner".

Other attribute domain (Vertex, Edge, Face), although sharing the same interface, is a new feature.

In that case, I'm not sure if it should really be considered a bug. It seems to be something that just hasn't been implemented. But it is certainly something that should be implemented.

So I'll consider a ToDo for now.

I think this is a very strange conclusion, @mano-wii that you made. Original poster clearly stated that the problem is that only Face Corner attributes gets exported (in my case not even that), and you confirmed that it is the expected behavior. But that means that Alembic Export itself is an incomplete feature in Blender, and should be clearly marked as such in UI. Somewhere in the Alembic export panel, it should be stated that the exporter is limited to a certain number of features (such as face corner data only). If there are not limitations listed, then users will rightfully think that the feature is broken. We can spend hours or days trying to troubleshoot something that wasn't even supposed to work, so putting a line in an exporter saying "Alembic Import/Export is very limited, Click Here for details" would be the least that can be done.
Thank you
EDIT: Or at least, the limitations of Blender's Alembic Importer and Exporter should be clearly stated and highlighted in the Documentation. Currently reading the Documentation for Blender's Alembic, we are led to believe the importer and exporter behave as expected, when in fact I'd say about a half of alembic functionality is covered.
