Blender only loads the baked frames that are needed to display/render. So if a Blender instance only renders one frame, only that frame is loaded. That might be good enough for your use-case. …

I'm wondering, once you've baked the simulation, what do you do with it? It would load all the data into RAM anyway when play back the simulation later. We don't have any automatic unloading…

My target is to write cache to disk without keeping the cache into the ram during the simulation, because this often ends up in eating up all my ram.

That's not possible currently…

The fix for now was to disable baking when the cache is disabled: bd783c8c1ba5ba94eb730dd6193c9d10be68ba37 This can be improved later.

@lichtwerk I just tested 4.1 daily build (42a74a28f212) and the issue is still there. Has this patch been merged in 4.1? Any chances of a 4.0.3 integration? Thanks!
