I've managed to rectify the import of textures so this issue can be removed from my list.

After rotating the mesh 90 degrees such that it aligns with the armature, the animations seem to work fine. Texture imports too.
So I think the only issue here is that rotation issue, which I've seen before in fbx imports sometimes, but it's a relatively small problem considering it is FBX. I don't think this needs information from user anymore, but I also doubt this will get fixed, since time would be better spent on USD support and deleting all memory of FBX from this corporeal realm. Let's wait for a dev to decide.
