System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22000-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 517.48

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.1 Release Candidate, branch: master, commit date: 2022-09-30 13:03, hash: cc8df686ad
Worked: No

Short description of error
After saving and reloading, the object's material changes unexpectedly.
This bug only appears on objects that have library overrides.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the errorbug check.zip

  1. Download bug check.zip
  2. Open the t2.blend file. You can see that the cube contains red and green.
  3. Then select mat2a in the material list and save it as t4.blend.
  4. Reload t4.blend, and the cube is only red.

My current bypassing method:
Before saving, choose the same material slot as t1.blend. Only in this way can the object's material do not turn into another.

t1.blend is the original data.
t2.blend is a link of t1.blend, and then replace the data material to the object material.
t3.blend is wrong, just like the t4.blend you get.

Thank you for the report.
I can confirm the unexpected behavior and forward it to the developers.

You might also want to describe how you overwritten the original materials after linking the object in t1.blend. (I'm not sure the steps from there and this must be related to the bug).

After the link t1.blend object.
Create library override on the object.
Switch the first material slot to object mode.
Then select mat1.
Then create a local copy and rename it to mat1a.
Do the same for mat2.
Then get t2.blend.

Hi, thanks for the report, this is a known issue/TODO that needs to be tackled at some point... Will keep the report alive, since looks like we did not have any task for materials support in liboverride yet...
