Short description of error
Attempting to load the Moana USD scene. Specifically the file island.usda from the USD file link here https://www.disneyanimation.com/resources/moana-island-scene/ .

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Extract the USD scene using 7zip and then run blender and import the island.usda file. It will take a while and then eventually crash with the debug out listed above. Thanks

can't even open usd
it fills up my ram and crashes, and i have 64GB

Yes I am crashing 96 GB of RAM but I am trying to figure out where the crash is happening and if it can be resolved in code. The other question I have is whether blender has a converter where I don't need to import/export to convert between 3D file formats

This may be expected right now since Moana heavily uses Instancing and I'm pretty sure the current importer does not support that yet - meaning that every instance will instead be realized into actual geometry leading to out of memory conditions.

You may have some success if you disable "Curves" in the Import options but you'll get an incomplete scene and it will still be large. Minimum of 64gb required.

Great news! Can import when disabling curves. Export to GLTF takes a couple hours but it worked. All the materials seems to not include textures and I'm wondering if that's an issue of converting ptex to other encodings. Thanks for your help on this issue.
