@aras_p wrote a blog post about his work optimizing the importer while benchmarking on the Moana island scene. Noting that at the end the import was faster now but afterwards Blender couldn't handle the resulting scene and still crash:

Looking at your crash result, it seems that Blender simply fails to acquire available memory to write stuff into. So should be a "known issue"/limitation.

The above errors like aligned_malloc returns null (and similar) means you are running out of memory and is a duplicate of #102183. That scene uses a lot of Curve instancing and that is not supported right now, so each instance becomes real geometry. You can disable the "Curves" option during Import to see if that helps (if you have >64gb of RAM). Even then, Blender will not work well with that scene. Will close as a duplicate.
