Scroll direction Natural doesn't work on node canvas views on macOS #102762

System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.6.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Apple M1 Apple 4.1 Metal - 76.3

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-10-04 18:35, hash: b292cfe5a9
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of bug
I have scroll direction natural enabled for the my mouse and node views like shader editor, geometry, compositor etc ignore this setting and the direction of scroll is incorrect where scrolling down zoom out but it should be apposite and zoom-in.
3D viewport behavior is correct and works as expected.
I also tried to reset factory settings, and clean uninstall this issue still exists.
This issue I think is linked to this about invert direction scroll: https://developer.blender.org/T89906

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • On macOS make sure Scroll Direction: Natural is enabled. (by going to system preferences > mouse/trackpad > scroll & zoom)
  • Scrolling down using Magic mouse or Trackpad on on 3D viewport. and it should zoom-in. (expected behavior)

Repeating the step 2 in Shader editor. and it will zoom-out. (incorrect behavior)

@jenkm I saw you making some changes in this area, I don't have much experience with Macs, Are you aware of some workaround or is this known to be broken?

I'm a bit confused about what exactly this report is about, about the mouse or trackpad, what the user thinks is the right behavior, so it's easier to just describe everything as it is.

Blender follows the following logic:

Moving the mouse towards the screen and scroll wheel up means increasing, zooming in, etc.

  • With Ctrl + MMB moving the mouse up (towards the screen) will zoom in panels, viewport, etc.
  • Clicking on the viewport gizmo and moving up will zoom in.
  • The mouse scroll wheel up will zoom in.
  • Ctrl + scroll wheel up will increase the value when the cursor is over the button.

Up should increase.

In general, enabling the "natural scroll direction" option should only affect scrolling e.g. panels or file lists.

Traditional mouse with scroll wheel

If "natural scroll direction" system preferences is off

  • All will work as described above.
  • Scrolling through panels or a file list will work as expected. ("inverted", matches other applications)

If "natural scroll direction" system preferences is on

  • There is not a single line of code to handle this case for the mouse scroll wheel.
  • Scrolling through panels or a file list will work as expected. (in "natural" direction, matches other applications)
  • All other scroll wheel actions will be inverted. Up will decrease, there will be a mismatch between the direction of mouse movement and the scroll wheel.

Trackpad or Magic Mouse

  • There is a code that looks at the "natural scroll direction" system preferences and corrects the direction when required.
  • But still need some fixes from #82006 to make everything work properly.
  • So, for example, If "natural scroll direction" is enabled: Cmd + scroll up work properly (increase, zooming in) in the Node editor and panels, but in 3D and Image editor it will work incorrectly (zooming out).

I would like to note that Windows has a similar option, perhaps unlike macOS it is disabled by default or affects only the trackpad, but all these #82006 issues are present on Windows too.
