System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.15.0-56-lowlatency-x86_64-with-glibc2.35 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (navi21, LLVM 15.0.6, DRM 3.49, 5.15.0-56-lowlatency) AMD 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 22.3.1 - kisak-mesa PPA, rocm 5.4.1
Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.4.0, branch: blender-v3.4-release, commit date: 2022-12-06 18:46, hash:
a95bf1ac01
Worked: never worked with HIP
Short description of error
System freeze then shut down the session and back to login screen when rotating a 64 subdiv default cube with /overlay/outline selected activated
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Just subdiv 64 a default cube, go to viewport shading cycles/GPU with /overlay/outline selected activated and try to rotate the cube in the viewport, should crash the system after a few tries.

After the crash happens, can you reboot the system and attach the output of
sudo journalctl -b -1
?If you can login again without a reboot, can you attach the output of
sudo dmesg
?Added subscriber: @Jonathan-61
Here is the output of
sudo dmesg
Note that I had a similar crash on ubuntu 20.04.5 + all previous HIP compatible versions of Blender but there is a "change" : before Ubuntu 22.04.1 and Blender 3.4, I had to reboot the computer. Now it "just" automatically put me back on the Ubuntu login screen.

You subdivide the cube 64 times as a modifier
Or in edit mode?
There is a difference, the first - changes the degree of quantity, the second - multiplies.
If you were trying to do it as exponentiation, then it's just a memory size issue, I don't think any server today could fit a cube into 64 subdivision powers...
This is basically the same as #100353, #96408, #98907. Which is most likely an issue with the kernel driver itself. So probably nothing we can do in Blender itself from our side.
Closed as duplicate of #100353
Right click in edit mode. And I have the bug on simple objects (but more complex than a cube). If I do this 64 subdived default cube on the same computer on mac/metal or windows/hip (I have a triple boot) , everything is fine. It happens at a time (can't say exactly when) where I suppose I reach and pass a certain amount of geometry. I've never used yet a 64x subdiv modifier !
For instance this object would also crash, it's a subdiv 3 modifier (but not in mac/metal or windows10) :
