System Information
Operating system: Mac OS
Graphics card: Apple M1 Max, 64g Ram
Broken: 3.4.1

Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring attention to a recent issue I have encountered while using my M1 Max mbp. I have noticed that when I use large numbers, such as 50,000, or have a large number of display children, such as 100, my M1 Max mbp crashes and becomes unresponsive.

I have tried various troubleshooting methods, such as clearing cache and restarting the device, but to no avail. I am reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced this issue and if they have found a solution.

I would greatly appreciate any information or support that can be provided. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Hi, thanks for the report. #97542 is very similar to your bug report though it wasn't replicable on M1 (as said in comments).
Can you share .blend file in which the crash/freeze happens?
Could you specify when exactly the issue triggers? immediately when hair count is increased?

Dear PratikPB2123,

Thank you for your response. The issue is not limited to a specific file, but occurs regularly with any file.

I created a new file with a simple cube, turned on the real-time render in the Cycles engine, and used M1 Max in Metal. When I added a hair particle system with the settings mentioned, the program crashed when switching from the render to solid mode.

I have tested this several times and have consistently encountered the same issue. I wonder if it's due to incorrect settings in Blender or if my computer is simply not powerful enough to handle the task.

Thank you

CPU utilization seems high in uploaded image. Maybe it is responsible for the crash?
I followed your steps with 50k hair strands but unable to get the crash in 3.4
CPU/memory usage is also normal.
Can you check again in 3.5 build with metal viewport backend?: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Dear PratikPB2123

Thank you for your message.
I tested again with 3.5 and the crash still occur.
I recorded a 2min video and uploaded to youtube for your reference.

Hi, thanks for the video. It's indeed helpful.
This doesn't look like a bug to me. You are adding 100 children for 50k hair strands, i.e. 50k * 100 hair-strands on mesh. It'll take time to add that much particles.
As shown in the video, Blender did not crash, instead you force stopped the running process.
Process will be back to normal if wait for some time (took me ~20 mins)

While we do continue to work on improving performance in general, potential performance improvements are not handled as bug reports.

Also: Current hair-particle system might be removed in future since there is alternative for it (Curves hair: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/curves/primitives.html?highlight=empty%20hair#empty-hair)
