Sculpt brush Reverts to Default When Undoing #106796

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.25336-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 531.41

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.6.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-04-09 23:42, hash: 0a460d470718
Worked: 2.79

Description of error

When using a non-default brush such as clay strips, then undoing, the brush switches to the default one (draw brush). Now this is frustrating to the user because you need constantly switch back to your brush after every ctrl + z. Stupid bug that interrupts the workflow.

Now this bug is not limited to sculpt mode, it happens in vertex painting, weight painting, texture painting and hair sculpt mode.

However this bug doesn't happen to most users because for it to happen you need to have two main windows.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Add a new main window (Window > New Main Window) and switch the workspace (say "shading")
  • In primary main window: switch to sculpt mode
  • Choose clay strips
  • Press ctrl + z
  • Observe the brush is draw brush and not clay strips 😵‍💫

Note: I think this has to do something with workspace since switching them can fix this bug but also crash blender

Hi, thanks for the report. Does this happen in default "layout" workspace?
Can you check again with factory settings?: File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings

Can you share a complete video that shows a way to repro the issue from scratch.
I'm able to confirm this when:

  1. sculpt mode is active in one window (with default brush)
  2. A operation is performed that creates a global-undo step (say: move nodes in another window)
  3. Change brush in sculpt mode
  4. Undo.

This operation will load the step created in "2nd" point which is a global/memfile undo step.
AFAIK Global/memfile creates full copy of the current scene. Which means the step has stored "Draw" brush as active.

Here @PratikPB2123 here the bug from scratch on factory settings.

Is it possible for me to change the label of the issue? (from needs information from user to needs triage? Or it's only the moderators can do)

Thanks
