Short description of error
Made a Mesh Torus fine, but Blender froze twice when I tried to SHADE SMOOTH
Although when i scaled the torus down quite a bit, right clicking and selecting "shade smooth" did not cause the program to freeze on the third try.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
add> mesh> Torus
Right click torus > select "shade smooth" Blender Froze twice at this point
Could not reproduce the error on the third try.
The attached file was autosaved at the point right before the torus was "shade smooth"ed
Not sure if this auto-generated file will help
Hi @Phil-Sawa ! I believe this is might be just shader compiling causing Blender to hang just a little bit. Any more information you can tell us about "Froze"? like if it completely stops responding indefinitely, or it hangs a little bit and resumes normal?
Indefinitely stopped responding and I couldn't even quit out of it. had to restart or use system monitor to force quit.
The thing that happened between when I had the two indefinite freezes and when it started working fine was this:
Had a cat sit on & press random keys on my keyboard : )
no joke! that same cat just typed the following:
Oh wait I continued the tutorial where it asks you to duplicate said torus 2 times.
Before I did I made sure I was following the previous step so I right-clicked and selected "Shade Smooth".
Now Blender has frozen indefinitely once again.
Just like the last 2 times, I can't even click the 'x' on the top right corner of the window to close it. It just stays open.
An interesting aside is that after I clicked "shade smooth" I was zooming in to get a closer look at the Torus. That is when the scrolling slowed down so I had to scroll farther to reach the same point I would have before. Tough to explain. The scrolling got slower and slower even though I was moving my finger on the mouse wheel at the same speed. Eventually it just didn't respond to my scrolling at all.
Hope this helps.
When I checked system monitor it said Blender was using 10% of the CPU while it was frozen.
Opened Blender again and got as far as duplicating and placing the duplicated Torus once then Blender Froze indefinitely again.
On my third try today I quit out of Blender (Which system monitor said was using 12 percent while indefinitely Frozen)
Then I re-opened the same file.
Scaled and duplicated to Torus 2 times.
All without a slowdown or Freeze.
No cat sat on the keyboard this time : )
But it works!
Once I was done with the Torus' I moved on to the next part which was a cylinder. Once I clicked "shade smooth" it gave me about 30 seconds before Blender froze indefinitely again.
I ended the task in system monitor, then tried again. This time before I could do anything but scroll Blender froze indefinitely.
Tried editing the cylinder and when Blender froze indefinitely this time, it was using 20% of the CPU
@Phil-Sawa try starting blender with
blender -d --debug-gpu
and see if it outputs anything weird during the freeze?Did a few operations in Blender before I saw this but I will restart now using the code you suggested, @ChengduLittleA
Oh, terminal responded with:
`Command 'blender' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install blender
`
I guess since I didn't install it through apt it doesn't recognize Blender. (I downloaded it from the website)
Do I maybe need to move it from downloads or navigate into downloads to run the command?
__
Nope navigated in terminal to the location but it still gave me the same error code as above.
`phil@CodedoC:~/Documents/Blender3D/blender-3.5.0-linux-x64$ blender -d --debug-gpu
Command 'blender' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install blender
`
__
Woop! Found out I needed to put
./
in front by reading:https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/launch/linux.html
Blender started up from the command line!

My Cat Nikkie pressed a few keys for 15 minutes or so and Blender never froze even though I used "shade smooth" but here it is:
I'll hopefully be able to try again tomorrow, remembering to use that command.
No freezes today either
Humm if there's no problem now then we could probably consider this not a bug?
Yeah not a but sounds like a plan,
It didn't crashe today either but terminal had some errors:
This is the same error I believe to #107494 (comment) . So will close this one :).
