System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19045 Build 19045
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, AMD Adrenalin driver version 23.5.1 (Up to date as of today)
Blender Version
Broken: 3.51, 2023-04-24 18:11, e1ccd9d4ald3, branch blender-v3.5-release
Worked: Unknown, hadn't tested with Cycles on this project before now.
Short description of error
A project I've been working on crashes if I try to render it using either CPU or HIP with Cycles.
Sometimes it'll softlock into "Updating Images" or "Updating Shaders", not freezing until I give up and try to cancel the render (be it by cancelling the render or switching from Render View on the viewport)., but most of the times just crashing Blender.
I can get renders to work in Cycles on the startup file and on separate project I have. It seems like something specific on this project is what causes the crash.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the project and either attempt to render with F12 or switch into Render View in Cycles. Happens both with CPU render and GPU render.
Can redo the crash on rendering with CPU device (verified in 4.0)
@Vitoria hi, could you simplify the file further? Remove object, unlink/delete additional materials/textures, etc. This will help in further investigation.
(I'll also try to simplify the file)
Crash on Cycles rendering using HIP (CPU and GPU)to Crash on Cycles rendering using CPUSo I'm doing some tests here on my end.
These are the collections that I'm trying to render. I noticed I can render the 'char', 'staff' and 'env' collections without a crash through render preview. 'backpack' and 'accessories' are the ones which crash.
Update: I just got 'backpack' render for a few moments, could even move the viewport camera, before it crashed.
It seems like it's the amount of textures crashing it, thing is these textures are quite low resolution, and with the great majority of them it's just diffuse, a few have alphas, and then a few are a bit more complex, this is nothing compared to a big PBR scene in terms of texture numbers, especially since the highest res textures in this project are 256x256.
Another guess I have is that it's because they're PSD files? I was loading those in because I like texturing in 2D in Photoshop and then just refreshing the texture in Blender to see the result.
I can confirm crash. It the best simplified version of user file. Just one head model, material with 2
psd
texture images (unused), camera.Crash became more secretive. You need to play with
Esc
andF12
a lot of time to get it without stack.Based on Pratik's callstack and Iliya's repro that also has PSD textures, I'm fairly certain this is a problem in the external library we use to load that format. They were able to make a fix but Blender will need to update our libraries so I'll confirm this.
The OpenImageIO bug was: https://github.com/OpenImageIO/oiio/issues/3824 and fixed by https://github.com/OpenImageIO/oiio/pull/3877
