Cycles is not working in 3.5.1 on a MacBook M1 Max—causes the program to immediately freeze! #108563

System Information
Operating system: macOS-13.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API Apple M1 Max 1.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.5.1, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-04-24 18:11, hash: e1ccd9d4a1d3
Worked: (This started happening two days ago, and I only updated to 3.5.1 today. But in the days/weeks prior it was 3.4)

Short description of error
On my MacBook M1 Max (with all upgrades possible), I have had to force quit Blender countless times in the last 48 hours after turning on viewport Cycles view. Upgrading to 3.5.1 has seemingly made it a constant problem. Even now opening a brand new project, then turning on Cycles render, it starts saying it’s loading kernels (very slowly), and never renders, freezing the viewport, forcing me to force quit. So it seems I no longer can turn on Cycles in 3.5.1.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
There is no further steps really, this is happening on a new project for me. Hopefully you all can see this and figure out something! I’m happy to provide further details if you need anything. I use Blender for my day-to-day at work so fingers crossed this isn’t the new normal for the foreseeable future. Also, love you all!

Does this still occur when using the 3.6 beta: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Also, it's not clear about what Blender version worked and when. You say it started happening a few days ago? Were you using 3.4 at that time? Did 3.4 work and then suddenly stop working after an OS update maybe etc.?

+1 using Blender 3.5.1 on a MacBook Pro M1 Max running the latest version of OSX Monterey (12.6.7).

CPU computing works fine, but GPU computing freezes and fails to render.

To the original poster, try changing the render device to CPU instead of GPU. This is just a temporary solution until GPU computing works again.
