If retopology shader is enabled ocluded verts cannot be selected BUG #109277

Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 531.29

Broken: version: 3.6.0 Release Candidate, branch: blender-v3.6-release, commit date: 2023-06-22 20:19, hash: fa1121765d53
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error

Selection of ocluded verts edges and faces should work when Retopo Shader is active ,without X-ray enabled!
I works (without X-ray enabled) when Retopo shader is turned off.

Steps:

  1. Open default scene with a single Cube
  2. duplicatd the cube and move the duplicated one so it randomly overlaps some of the original cubes verts
  3. Seelct the original cube, and go to edit mode
  4. Select any verts ocluded by the other Cube -> Works (without X-ray enabled)
  5. Now turn on Retopolgy Shader and try to select the ocluded vert -> Does not WORK (without X-ray enabled)

Expected Behaviour: Selection of ocluded verts edges and faces should work when Retopo Shader is active ,without X-ray enabled!

If I read this #104599, this has been part of the discussion and it was decided to not select occluded elements?

This is not a bug, but a feature.
If it happened magically because of a bug that would've saved me a lot of work implementing it haha.
When retopologizing, the ability to select vertices you can not see is annoying and useless.
I recommend you either turn on x-ray or turn off the retopology overlay.

I can confirm this. This decision happened out of some testing and it was obvious that the ability to select hidden geometry during retopology is very counter-intuitive.
It leads to very frequent moments of accidentally selecting and editing occluded geometry without noticing.
