Merged
Germano Cavalcante merged 2 commits from mano-wii/blender:snap-symbols-alt into main 2023-09-01 17:08:14 +02:00

This PR proposes make snap symbols more descriptive.

At the moment two approaches are being analyzed. "Minimalist" or "Industry Standard"(Removed).

Minimalist Industry Standard(Removed)
GIF-Minimalist.gif GIF-Industry.gif

Minimalist:

This is a freer style, subject to change.

  • Circle is for vertex.
  • Two lines aligned to the edge represents the snap to edge.
  • If the ends of these lines are closed (forming a square) it means that the snap is to a part of the edge, either center or perpendicular.
  • Face aligned circle with a line in the middle is for Face.

Industry Standard (Removed):

They are symbols most commonly used for different CAD applications.

Hi,

I think for now and in the long run, it'd be better to follow what most software is using.

I like the minimal version, it looks more elegant, but this is something new for Blender users so they have to learn symbols anyway. Users that come from other software will feel more familiar with the industry standard version

Also as new snapping options are introduced we wouldn't have to come up with a design for our minimal version, we could use whatever others are using already.

After user feedback it seems there's no such thing as "Industry Standard" because many software have different approaches (symbols, colors, tooltips).

Your minimal style feels intuitive. Let's go with that.

I wouldn't have more styles as option, it just becomes a pain to maintain multiple styles each time a new snap feature is introduced.

Hi, thanks for pushing the snap project forward. This getting merged felt under my radar. I would still like a chance to make a case towards the "Industry Standard" solution.

Could we all get together in the next UI module meeting (on Tuesday) and go over this before 4.0 goes to Beta?
