System Information
Operating system: macOS-14.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API Apple M2 Max 1.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.6.3
Broken: version: 3.6.4
Broken: version: 3.6.5
Broken: version: 4.0b -- less bad!
Broken: version: 4.1a --less bad!

Behavior changed in 97d9bbbc97

Short description of error
See images below!
Artefacts with meshlights
In rendered viewport (In camera view as well) && final render.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the file and see for yoursef.
The glitch is changing it's outcome when mesh lights get subdivided in edit mode...

I filed a bugreport when I was using Intel MacOS and they said it's fixed with area lights.
#110183
And now this is glitching with mesh lights...and silicon MacOS

The worst glitch happens with blender 3.6.3 -- 3.6.5
With blender 4.0 - 4.1 its less bad, as you will see or in the images below.

PS:
I'm getting an extreme warm feeling in my throath when I see how MacOS is supported.
All my bugreporting work seems to be for nothing... I don't see the importance and a reason !
And this is just one example.

No one is testing it on MacOS or in other words: It looks like that most devs are working for blender BUT not with blender, especially with MacOS Blender intel/silicon.

So how to get things fixed. I only can file bugreports over and over, and sometimes several times until....
Some are still open since 6 month and up to last year...

Call me the grinch if you like, but if no one takes it serious, I have to make wind to get heared.

I can confirm on Windows. Results are indeed improved from 3.6 to 4.0
It seems #112282 is related to this report.
@lichtwerk , can you check? and help in finding the first good commit?

@brecht / @weizhen : should this go into 3.6 LTS?

Sure in my opinion.
3.6.x is the only version at the moment 90% working.
Until 4.0 will be used like 3.6, it takes a wile for everything (addons , open issues, open changes) to be up to date and working.
(maybe in 4.2)

And to be honest, for all the other versions back to 3.6.3 too, because many users are using even older versions of blender.

I've backported the area and mesh light changes to 3.6. But there are still precision issues here, unclear still if we can fix them efficiently or if we are reaching the limits of 32 bit floats.

The numerical issue causing the rings and bands is addressed by #119224.

There's a second issue here as well: The light tree option appears to have a problem with the Z scale of one of the lights being zero. Setting it to e.g. 0.00001 fixes the border in the right mesh's illumination. I'll look into that separately.
