*System Information i5 4670 CPU, 16gig ram.
Operating system: Windows 10 22H2 19045.3636 Fully patched
Graphics card:Nvidia GTX960, 546.01 latest drivers

Blender Version
Worked: 4.0.0 Alpha, 6a79639ef7, master, 2023-07-06,
Broken: Any version after this one (Any 4.00 beta and 4.1 Alpha)

Grey empty Window appears , then drops me to desktop, no error message.

Tried a fresh install after deleting $appdata%\Blender Foundation folder.

Note: 366RC works also.

I have attached the crash log of an attempt to run using the batch file “blender_debug_gpu_glitchworkaround.cmd”

I am thinking my system is under specced for any future 4.0 versions.

Hi, thanks for the report. Does this happen when blender is launched from blender_factory_startup.cmd?
Crash seems to happen while adding quick access menu items.
Clearing config folder may fix the crash.

Yes. Launching Blender from blender_factory_startup.cmd also crashes. Results attached.

Renaming the config folder in %appdata%\Blender Foundation\Blender\4.0 did not fix the crash.

Thanks. Do you have special characters in folder names (mainly system bookmarks)?

No need to rename the it 😅 (I asked to remove it, but it won't make any difference)

No I do not have special characters in any filenames.

The full path to the Blender config folder is as follows:

"C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\4.0\config" (without quotes)

The full path to to Blender executable is as follows:

"C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender" (without quotes)

I even extracted the files and folder structure from the latest nightly 4.0.0 Beta to an empty folder on the C: drive - same crash.

Note: I am running my PC with an account that is in a group that has local administrative privileges.

I think I have found the solution.

Even though I am running my PC with an account that is in a group that has local administrative privileges, I never-the-less ran the Blender.exe as the actual administrator. Surprisingly this worked.

So I logged on as my normal account (the one where blender crashed). This time I right clicked the blender.exe executable and selected “run as administrator”. This also worked.

Since initially running blender.exe as administrator, I can now run Blender 4.0.0 Release Candidate normally with having to select “run as administrator”.

Looks like the problem is solved (fingers crossed).

Similar crash has been fixed a few hours ago in 4.1: #114855 / 5c04b477aa, closing.
