MAC PRO 2019 (Intel)
3.2 GHz 16-core Intel Xeon W
AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Dou 32 GB
192 GB RAM
OS: Sonoma 14.2.1

Blender Version
3.6.5 (3.6.5 2023 -10-19)

When trying to use depth of field in the viewport...blender will crash.

Resetting these to cpu only blender will run normally.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Enable GPU in System Preferences.
Enable GPU rendering in Rendering Properties set Device to GPU Compute.

The scene can be the default cube.

Please note these issue did not ocurr for any of the Blender versions when running Ventura.

Hi, thanks for the report. Please share logs: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#macos
And also check in recent 4.1 build: https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

"When trying to use depth of field in the viewport...blender will crash."

Reported something similar here:
#113086 (comment)

Issue only started as soon as I updated to Sonoma.

I have tried 4.1 alpha and get the same result.

As soon as the GPUs are selected the render viewport can no longer see mesh objects. Rendering will not work. Blender crashes.

The following files are from the crashes related to 4.1 alpha.

Yes, looks same as #113086, closing
Thanks @Andrew-Herman (it seems crash is not specific to EEVEE engine)

Just an FYI - I have tested this issue all the way back to Blender 3.3 and still having the same issue when trying to use the ViewPort Shading when the GPUs are active for rendering in Cycles.

I am not savvy enough to say if the issue with EEVEE and Cycles is the same but its pretty clear the AMD GPUs just arent working after upgrading to Sonoma.

Yeah, Sonoma introduced a slew of other graphical issues with its release, even outside of Blender. I've been bug reporting for months on both ends.

I have the same exact problem, there have been any solution?

Similar issue on my end too using Blender Alpha 4.1.0 (4.1.0 2024-01-15)

Cycles GPU does not work
Cycles CPU works
Eevee crashes Blender after a few seconds of Blender freezing
Eevee Legacy works as intended

These issues started happening with Blender v4.0 and up.

Blender 3.6.5 works fine on my system, with Cycles on both CPU and GPU (On both OpenGL and Metal BackEnd)
This should narrow the issue to the Blender 4 to 4.1.0
