System Information
Operating system: Linux-6.7.5-zen1-1-zen-x86_64-with-glibc2.39 64 Bits, WAYLAND UI
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT (radeonsi, navi31, LLVM 16.0.6, DRM 3.57, 6.7.5-zen1-1-zen) AMD 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 24.0.1-arch1.1

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Beta, branch: blender-v4.1-release, commit date: 2024-02-19 21:26, hash: 42a74a28f212
Seen the same issue with Blender 3.6.8 and upwards.

Short description of error
textures set to clipped will have their edge repeated indefinitely instead of going black on HIP cycles

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Load a texture with non-black color on at it's edge and set the image to clip. On Cycles CPU or OptiX the object will go all black outside of where the texture is mapped to. On HIP the colors on the edge of the texture will repeat for the non-mapped area

Example with HIP

CPU Cycles

I added images to showcase the issue and the example file. I have seen the issue since Blender 3 but as HIP was unstable I wasn't using that anyways. Tested Blender 4.1 Beta with Rocm6 today and this clip bug is still there.

This is a known issue and is a limitation of HIP at the moment. This limitation is already documented in the Blender manual, and is listed as something that needs fixing in the HIP device task.

To reduce the clutter of duplicate reports, I will close this issue.

I am glad the bug is known but I find it unacceptable that it has not been tackled in 3 years according to the linked report. What's the point of having HIP support if it can't even load textures?

This specific issue was a HIP issue. A issue that could only really be fixed by AMD. Since the issue can only be fixed by AMD, there's not much the Blender foundation could do to resolve it, so it has been left as something that needs resolving on the Cycles side once AMD fixes the issue on the HIP side.

Now it has been some time, and it seems AMD has fixed this issue, and the adjustments to Cycles to make use of the fix from AMD wasn't made. I have left a comment on the HIP device task letting the developers know about that.

Once again, I am closing this bug report to reduce clutter and duplicate bug reports.
