System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 551.23

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Beta, branch: blender-v4.1-release, commit date: 2024-03-05 20:16, hash: 49c723e1176a

Short description of error
When linking a collection from an external library, and you have another linked collection already selected in the outliner, the new linked collection gets placed into the existing linked collection. This shouldn't be possible, and there are already safeguards against doing this in a different way, e.g. when trying to move/link the collection using drag-and-drop in the outliner, it won't let you do it. If you do manage to get it inside the existing linked collection, the new linked collection will disappear on reload of the blend file.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Download the two attached blend files, open main.blend
  • Collection 1 is already linked into this file from library.blend. Select this collection in the outliner.
  • File > Link, select library.blend, turn OFF the option Instance Collections, then select the collection Collection 2 to link.
  • Collection 2 is now linked inside Collection 1.
  • Save and reload the file. Collection 2 is gone.

Hi, thanks for the report. Can confirm. I think if destination collection is linked/overrided then we can try linking in its parent collection.
Will check.
