DupliVerts do not render in Cycles #58956

Short description of error
Objects instanced across faces or verts (DupliVerts) do not render with Cycles

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Add Monkey to scene
  • Shift select default cube
  • Press Ctrl-P to parent and select Object
  • Select the default cube
  • Enable Faces in the Instancing panel (Love the new UI implementation of this by the way)
  • Note that you should now see six monkey heads
  • Switch Render mode to Rendered
  • Observe that if the render engine is set to Eevee or Workbench the monkey heads and cube are rendered
  • Observe that if the render engine is set to Cycles the monkey heads and cube are NOT rendered.

Upon updating to the December 24/25th version of blender 2.8, the problem is fixed in newly made, basic scenes. However, when I start the viewport cycles renderer in one of my old scenes, it won't stop updating. Normally, it would perform several samples and then say "rendering done" but now it just keeps updating the first, lowest resolution sample. Deleting the dupliverts object or disabling dupliverts stops the issue. Is it possible that this is a side affect of the changes and than all new blend files will not be affected?

Note 1: In that old scene, dupliverts don't render in F12 render either...

Note 2: Re-enabling dupliverts in that file causes the problem to occur again

Note 3: Duplifaces does not have an issue, just dupliverts

Edit: I figured out the issue. Its caused by a modifier (mirror) applied to the duplicator object. Removing the modifier removes the issue. Adding a modifier in a simpler scene causes the issue. Here is my bug report: https://developer.blender.org/T59837
