Blender crashes on refocus #59470

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 x64
Graphics card: Nvidia GTX 1060
Processor: Intel Core i5 3570

Blender Version
Broken: 2.79-git.4e3562f45ad, 2.79-git.968bf0df148, 2.76 to 2.80 from blender download page. All same behavior.
Worked: none

Short description of error
Blender crashes when switching back into focus with ERROR_ACCESS_VIOLATION

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I open blender. I switch to another window and back into blender via alt-tab, by clicking, or just double-tapping the win-key, and blender crashes instantly.

  • No Error log generated. Running in CMD just gives me this: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
  • I tried running blender from console with --factory-startup, no change
  • I tried both .zip and .msi versions, none worked
  • I tried running versions from 2.76 up to 2.80, always same behavior
  • I tried opencl.dll from other solutions, did not work
  • I updated to newest drivers (from 385.xx to 417.35), nothing changed
  • I tried turning off my anti-vir (windows defender), did not work
  • I am slowly going mad

Is there any way I can get a better error msg?
Any help or stabs to this would be highly appreciated. Screenshot of cuda-z and cpu-z.

Have you tried running blender and time previously on that machine? If not then I think this might be a bug with Windows itself. I think there was some use that had this problem too. But it happened have a windows update.

@fclem I can't seem to find that task. Do you know which one I'm talking about?

Blenders wasn't installed previously on that machine. I fixed it by removing the "WinTab32.dll" file in C:\Windows\System32. But removing dll-files does not seem like a proper way to fix issues. Here's to hoping it won't break my PC.

That's a DLL for pen tablet support. Are you using a pen tablet? If so, does disconnecting it avoid the crash?

No tablet was connected during any of this. I used a Tablet with proprietary drivers on thic PC before, but not during these issues.

I cannot reproduce the problem in blender 2.79b or blender 2.83.

Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18941 64 Bits
Graphics card: Radeon (TM) RX 480 Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.13559 Core Profile Context 26.20.12028.2

Is this still a problem in the latest builds?

We haven't been able to reproduce this ourselves, but we know it's a bug given the number of reports.

I don't think that #73315 and this bug are the same, because in #73315 it only appears when I open any other Blender window except the main, and only when using tablet.
For example, with connected tablet everything works fine using a mouse until I move cursor with the tablet. And not every tablet behaves the same. Both of my tablets are using their drivers, not (only) windows built-in.
Also, #73315 didn't appear on pre-2.8 versions.

Maybe there is the way I could get any info from logs or CMD?
Also, I will try to replicate THIS bug on my machine later, but I didn't get any crashes from just switching applications.

Ok, I'll keep them separate until we're know. Still seems likely to me that both are crashing due the same bug in tablet API access.

I just had luck to test on another PC.
Win 10, Intel i5, no dedicated GPU.

Tried to switch between applications - nothing crashes. Can't reproduce #59470.
Still crashes as in #73315.

But seems like the bugs are really closely related as I got an error message

Error : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
Address : 0x00007FFE82C14943
Module : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Wintab32.dll

Renaming (or deleting) Wintab32.dll fixes #73315 too.

There have been significant changes to tablet handling on Windows today. Can you verify if this is still an issue in the latest build?

Hi, I'm sorry but I had to reinstall Windows on my PC (so no driver) and am no longer using (or owning) the tablet. I'm afraid I won't be able to verify, sorry for that.
