Unify outliner "select hierarchy" behavior with shift-selection behavior #71257

  • Shift selecting multiple objects highlights them in blue and enables control-clicking to de-select single objects.
  • Using "select hierarchy" to do the same does not highlight them in blue, and does not enable control-clicking to de-select single objects (or the root).

Since viewport and outliner selection is now finally unified, so should the other various selection options also be.

The current behavior feels like a consistency break in the user experience.

Use case:

Tested in both 2.81 beta and 2.82 alpha.

I ran into this today as well, preparing for a course to give. Here's an additional inconsistency: right-clicking on an object and using Select will always only set the last selected object to blue. But if you do this a few times with different objects and then undo the last selection all previously selected objects get highlighted blue even though there previously was only one in blue.

We already have open, confirmed bug reports for this:
#71290 (2.81 Outliner: inconsistent selection and context menu)
#71404 (2.81 Outliner: selection not synced when editing armature)
#71061 (outliner doesn't move objects after "select hierarchy")

So unless @Zachman has objections, I will close this task, lets continue discussions in the corresponding other tasks...

@lichtwerk Yes, this and other reports are all related to D5572. The operators just need to be tagged for syncing.
