System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14757 Core Profile Context 20.12.1 27.20.14501.28009

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.0 through 2.91.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-11-25 08:34, hash: 0f45cab862
Worked: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-03-12 05:06, hash: 375c7dc4ca, type: Release

Short description of error
Graphical artifacts that seems to be originated from the vertices of a mesh
blender_2_91_graphical_bug_amd_6800xt.png

I went as far as version 2.82.7, and the artifacts were gone. Since version 2.83, the bugs are present.
blender_2_82_7_graphical_bug_amd_6800xt.png
I deleted all config files. All versions were redownloaded for testing.
I have found that, with X-Ray activated, the artifacts disappears
Those same artifacts can also be seen in Edit mode, but they are less pronounced.
2020.12.18-19.40_Trim.mp4
I also tested with the latest version of Blender which was available, the same bug happens:
version: 2.92.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-12-17 20:43, hash: 23233fcf05, type: Release
The file used in the screenshots / video:
2_91_graphical_bug_amd_6800xt.blend

These artifacts also occur when using a mask in sculpt mode, and when using shadows in solid mode.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Starting with the default.blend:

  • create a mesh with many vertices (a UV Sphere or the default cube with the subdivision surface modifier),
  • go into Weight Paint Mode / Edit mode (although much more visible in Weight Painting Mode)

There are currently several issues with AMD drivers that affect viewport rendering, although mainly for the RX 400 and 500 series and the glitch looks different (see #82856). Could you test if downgrading to previous driver, e.g. 20.11.1 avoids these graphics glitches?

I can't reproduce the problem with my Nvidia GPU or in a VM.

I was unable to test with driver version 20.11.1 or older, as they do not offer compatibility with RX 6000 series GPUs. I tested with the oldest driver possible, 20.11.2, the glitches are still present.

Could you please check if the problem still occurs in the most recent daily build of 2.92 ? Workarounds for other issues with AMD graphics drivers have been committed perhaps they have resolved your issue as well.

Unfortunately, this issue is still not fixed with the latest build available: version: 2.92.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2021-01-13 23:55, hash: 5804bf25bd, type: Release
I should also add that I have not experienced any of the problems collected in #82856

After some more testing, I found that the "Shadow" option in the Viewport Shading menu does the same artifacts.
Tested with the same version and hardware as the original post.

As #84853 has the same GPU and driver combination, along with the same visual artifacts albeit in a different mode, I have merged the reports and will update this one with @AssafNegev’s finer version bisection.

Yes actually. It appears there are separate threads for 6700/6900 XT and this one for the 6800 XT. Although this one is older, the other thread has more information so I’ll merge this one into that one.

I tested the upcoming AMD driver and there the issue seems to be solved. Beta of the new driver will be made public very shortly.

renderer:	'AMD Radeon PRO W6800'
vendor: 'ATI Technologies Inc.'
version:	'4.5.14802 Core Profile Context FireGL 21.Q4 30.0.14002.136'

I will wait for community to confirm that the driver also work for them.
