Images in image editor/texture pain not saved with file #91368

Closed
opened 2021-09-13 10:13:55 +02:00 by jairus · 8 comments

System Information
Operating system: Windows
Graphics card: Nvidia-1070

Blender Version
Broken: 2.91.2 (stable)

Short description of error
Images lost from image editor if file not explicitly saved. Saving the blender file does not save the image in any form. If blender were to crash prior to saving the file out, all modifications to the image are reverted back to the last image save, regardless of when blender was last saved. Autosave does not store the image data either.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
As per #45636:

Reproducing is simple:

  • unwrap default cube in whichever way.
  • Hit texture paint, add diffuse slot and paint a few strokes
  • Save image (or pack)
  • Paint a few more strokes
  • Save .blend (ctrl + S) and quit Blender
  • Return -> your step 4. strokes are lost.

Suggested resolution: Have a 'Live edit' option flag in the Image menu of the image editor to enable saving the file as it is changed (similar to the text editor). Write image file on save (save, save as, autosave) if checked.

NB: Bug #45636 was reported Aug 1 2015, 9:03 AM. It's still a problem 6 years later as per the continued calls for this to be addressed in that thread.

No, as I did not exit blender. I had moved on to another task (shape keys in the Modelling tab), assuming it had saved at some point over the last 5 or 6 times I had selected either save or save as. When I returned to the Texture Paint tab to see why the texture wasn't looking right, I saw that it had reloaded the image from Friday, discarding at least 6 hours of work on it today.

Well, this really is a duplicate of #45636 (Texture paint doesn't prompt user to save painted textures).

All relevant discussion has already taken place there (there is no new information here).
I agree this is still an issue, it should be solved at some point, but devs responsible in this area have classified this as not a bug.
To keep this bugtracker organized, I am afraid I will have to merge this with #45636.
Feel free to raise your concerns in that report again, but there is no point in having two separate task for this.
Thx reporting anyways!
