System Information
Operating system:
Graphics card:

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 3.00
Worked:

Short description of error

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. Sculpt while having multires modifier on
  2. Move "sculpt" level up and down
  3. Go into edit mode? I am not sure if I did do this, but I read that some people did do it to cause the artifact to appear.
  4. Artifact appear
  5. Unable to fix, without restarting Handle safeguard v2.blend

I can read online that this seems to have been a bug for long, but I couldn't find a fix.

Can I use multires on my objects? What exactly caused this, and how can I fix it?

Can confirm the behavior.

Devs are aware though, there was even a commit that introduced a healing brush for this (but got reverted in favor of looking at the root cause of why the artifacts happen in the first place)

I can't seem to replicate this from scratch on either 3.6 or 4.2 - @JulienKaspar have you noticed this in a recent build / are you able to replicate it?

I'll see if I can make a reliable test geometry that causes this issue. It's definitely still a thing.

@Sean-Kim I had it happen today, I had the spikes appearing right after subdividing, I didn't even need to switch between subdiv levels. I'll see if I can reproduce the issue in an easy way.
Also I had it happen in the past when sculpting human heads (usually the spikes appear around the mouth and eyes), but I remember spikes not appearing if "Apply Base" is used before subdividing. (No idea why, it might just be a coincidence.)
